Auckland FC were knocked out of FIFA's Intercontinental Cup, losing 1-0 to Al-Ahli in Saudi Arabia.
It was the first competitive match for new coach Pedro Moreira, who recently replaced title-winning manager Steve Corica.
The A-League put in a strong defensive shift against the hosts, who largely dominated possession. Auckland was able to make some breaks of their own, registering three shots on target.
A goal from Saleh Abu Al-Shamat broke the deadlock in the 63rd minute, with the Saudi Pro League side holding the score until the full-time whistle.
Auckland Striker Sam Cosgrove was sent off in the 87th minute – seeing red for a dangerous challenge.
Auckland will now return home to continue preparations for its upcoming title defence, which kicks off in October.
