A Porirua high school has been cleared and closed immediately after a chemical substance was discovered on site this morning.
Fire and Emergency NZ were called to an incident in Takapūwāhia at around 8.55am on Wednesday, with crews from Porirua, Johnsonville and Thorndon responding.
In a notice to parents and caregivers, the school said the campus was being emptied. "Following safety advice after a chemical substance was discovered on site, we are clearing the campus in direct coordination with the police," a school spokesperson said.
No one had been hurt, according to the notice. "All students are safe and under full supervision."

Students are being released in stages by year level. Year 9 students are being held in the school hall, where parents and caregivers can collect them in person.
The school said Year 9 students would not be allowed to leave on their own without confirmed consent. Caregivers who wanted their child to make their own way home had to reply directly to the school email giving explicit permission.
Students in Years 10 to 13 are being released immediately to head home.
The school said Te Whare Ako students were making their own arrangements, and asked parents to contact them directly for updates.
