A man has died after a car went off a wharf and into Ōamaru Harbour last night.
Police were called to Holmes Wharf about 5.30pm with reports a vehicle had gone into the harbour, but no one was seen to resurface.
The body of the 69-year-old Ōamaru man was found with help from local divers, police, Fire and Emergency NZ and ambulance staff.
FENZ said it sent two crews from Ōamaru and did not need to cut through the vehicle to pull the man out.
Police said CPR was carried out immediately, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
"Our thoughts are with the man's family during this difficult time," police said.
A scene guard remained at Holmes Wharf overnight. The Serious Crash Unit and other specialist groups were due to examine the scene on Wednesday.
Police said their enquiries into the circumstances of the crash were ongoing, and they wanted to speak to anyone who witnessed it.
Fire and Emergency NZ and St John have been contacted for further comment.
