Young man critically injured after being hit by car near Feilding

Police were called to Halcombe Road, north of Feilding, at about 12.20am following reports a vehicle had hit a person.

A young man is fighting for his life in Wellington Hospital after a car struck him during an anti-social road user event in the Manawatū region early on Saturday morning.

Police were called to Halcombe Rd, north of Feilding, at about 12.20am following reports a vehicle had hit a person.

"That person was located with extensive injuries, and is currently in the Intensive Care Unit at Wellington Hospital," Detective David Burrows said.

The driver allegedly fled before officers arrived, and police are now urging that person to come forward.

"There were a number of people in attendance at the time this incident took place, and we believe someone will either have information that can assist us in identifying the alleged driver or any other information that can assist in our investigation," Burrows said.

Police acknowledged some witnesses may have video footage but felt pressure not to talk to them, and said anyone with concerns could have their information treated confidentially.

Burrows said the injured man's family were being supported.

"We're providing the family of the young person, who was injured, with the support they need at this time," he said. "We're urging people to please consider them and do the right thing and come forward with any information you have."

Burrows said the crash was a reminder of the dangers of anti-social road activity.

"This is a traumatic incident and something that could have so easily been avoided. Anti-social road activity is extremely dangerous, whether you are taking part or simply just observing, and this incident should be a reminder of that."
