Four youths were taken into custody after the driver of a stolen vehicle "appeared to attempt to run down an officer" setting up road spikes in Auckland last night.
The police Eagle helicopter located a stolen Toyota Aqua driving through East Tamaki last night at about 11pm.
Inspector Rod Honon said staff alerted officers on the ground who began setting up spikes in Ōtara.
"As the vehicle approached this intersection near Bairds Road and Waipapa Crescent the driver drove across Bairds Road, mounted the berm and appears to have attempted to run down an officer setting up spikes."
He said it was "incredibly lucky" the officer managed to get out of the way.
"Reckless acts like this will not be tolerated."
Honan said the vehicle then continued onto the Southern Motorway at "excessive speed and with no lights on", before getting off at Papakura and being successfully spiked on Dominion Rd.
Four youths, aged 13-15, were taken into custody and referred to Youth Aid.
