A critical incident probe has been launched by police after a man’s death in Palmerston North yesterday.
Police said the incident unfolded after officers spotted a person with an outstanding arrest warrant in a vehicle on Wilson Crescent in Highbury at 11.20am.
"On seeing Police, the vehicle stopped and pulled into a driveway, and two people then fled on foot," Inspector Phil Ward said.
Officers chased one of the occupants after recognising they had a warrant. They were taken into custody.
A second person, who had not been chased, was then found unresponsive at a neighbouring property.
"Immediate first aid was provided by police, including CPR, and other emergency services attended the scene," Ward said.
"Sadly, the man was pronounced deceased a short time later."
A critical incident investigation into the man's death has been launched. The Independent Police Conduct Authority (IPCA) has been notified, as is "standard procedure for police".
A scene examination was carried out and "inquiries remain ongoing".
"Members of the community can expect to see police in the area as our enquiries are carried out, however please be assured that there is not believed to be any ongoing risk to people’s safety," Ward said.
Those with information that could help the investigation were asked to call 105.
