Armed police descend on Te Kūiti after 'firearms-related' incident

Police said the incident was reported on Esplanade in the King Country town.

Armed police have closed roads over a "firearms-related incident" in Te Kūiti this morning.

Detective Inspector Stephen Ambler said the incident was reported on Esplanade in the King Country town.

"Cordons are in place from Ngarongo Street and Nettie Street," he told 1News.

"Members of the public are advised to avoid the area at this time."

Residents have reported at least 10 police vehicles at the scene.

Te Kūiti, located 80km south of Hamilton, has a population of nearly 5000.

Police and St John have been contacted for further comment.
