A van driver has been praised by UK police after pulling over to give an armed officer an impromptu lift, helping catch a fleeing suspect who was seconds away from vanishing into a park.

Kent Police were visiting a property in the seaside town of Margate, east of London on June 16 after reports of a serious assault in the area.

When officers arrived, a suspect managed to evade police and fled the scene on foot.

During the chase, a passing motorist stopped to help, telling a pursuing armed officer to get in the back of his van. They were able to catch up with the fleeing suspect and arrest him soon afterwards.

Armed Policing Superintendent Will Lay said the offender came close to losing patrols in a park.

"Thanks to the quick and selfless actions of this responsible and public-spirited driver, officers were able to apprehend the dangerous individual," he said.

"The successful arrest may not have been possible without the member of the public and his vehicle."

The member of the public was thanked for his actions and recommended for a commendation.
