Corrections is condemning the actions of a person who clung to the back of a prisoner escort van in central Auckland traffic.

Video has circulated on social media of the incident, which Corrections confirmed occurred on Tuesday.

Men’s prisons deputy commissioner Liz Hawthorn said the unwelcome passenger was not a prisoner.

"Corrections is concerned anytime a member of the public puts themselves in danger, particularly when holding onto a moving vehicle. The outcome could have been worse had they fallen off or been involved in an accident."

Auckland's prisoner escort services were provided by a contractor, Hawthorn said.

"They have spoken with their drivers who were unaware of this incident at the time, but were informed by a member of the public after it had happened yesterday."

The incident had not yet been reported to police, but Hawthorn said the contractor intended to do so.

"I have asked the contractor to remind their staff about remaining vigilant, particularly when driving through urban areas."
