Man charged after Auckland assault leaves one critically injured

A man has been charged after a grievous assault in east Auckland left one person critically injured.

Emergency services were called to Caen Rd in Panmure at around 6.30pm on Saturday.

Detective Senior Sergeant Ash Matthews said one person was taken to hospital with critical injuries.

"A 28-year-old man has been taken into custody in relation to the incident."

Early indications suggested the pair were known to each other, he said.

"Panmure residents can expect to see an increased presence in the area as police continue to investigate this matter."

A 28-year-old man was due to appear in Auckland District Court on June 22, charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

A St John spokesperson said it deployed one ambulance, one rapid response unit, and one manager to the scene.

"Our crews assessed and treated one patient who was transported to Auckland City Hospital in a critical condition."
