A major central North Island highway is closed this morning after a serious two-vehicle crash left people trapped near Waiouru in the early hours of Monday.
Emergency services were called to the crash on State Highway 1 at Waiouru between Shawcroft Rd and Access Rd No 17 at around 2.55am.

Police said initial indications were that there had been serious injuries.
Fire and Emergency NZ responded to the crash with one crew from Waiouru, with the trapped occupants now freed from the vehicles.
NZTA said the Desert Road closed at 3.30am between the intersections of State Highway 49 and State Highway 46.
"The police serious crash unit is on site and their investigations can take several hours," an NZTA spokesperson said.
"Northbound traffic detour via SH49, SH47 and SH46. Reverse for southbound."
