Police are investigating after a man was shot in Auckland's Mount Wellington this morning.

Armed police responded to the incident, with emergency services being called to the scene on Mount Wellington Highway between Te Horeta Rd and Rowlands Ave just after 6.30am.

Hato Hone St John responded with one rapid response unit, two operations managers and one ambulance.

"Our ambulance staff treated one patient and transported them to Auckland City Hospital in a serious condition," it said.

In an updated statement, Detective Senior Sergeant Rebecca Kirk said a man suffered "what appears to be a serious gunshot wound".

"Upon arrival, a man was located in a serious condition and transported to hospital," she said.

"A scene guard is in place, and inquiries are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.

"Members of the public can expect an increased police presence in the area to remain while these inquiries take place."

Motorists had been advised of delays on Mount Wellington Highway as police responded to the incident.

"At this stage the road remains open, however motorists are advised to take alternative routes or expect delays," a police spokesperson said.
