Two people have been injured after a jet ski exploded before sinking in Auckland's Hauraki Gulf yesterday afternoon.

Police were called just before 2pm after a vessel in the Motuihe Channel near Emu Point reported seeing a jet ski explode, Marine Rescue Centre Senior Constable Nick Hall said.

Smoke and flames could be seen in the area.

Two injured people were pulled from the water and taken to hospital, Hall said.

The pair had since been discharged and were recovering at home.

Early indications suggest the jet ski exploded after the fuel vapour line caught fire, "splitting the craft and causing it to sink", according to police investigating the incident.

The 20-year-old jet ski had been serviced annually.

The Police Maritime Unit today encouraged owners to check for hidden issues in older jet skis.

"Please check all fuel lines and fuel fittings as these items perish with age, and we encourage owners to replace such items periodically."
