Hilary Barry's 'utterly unexpected' Mother's Day gift

Mother's Day has come and gone and for Seven Sharp host Hilary Barry, the occasion's been marked with an "utterly unexpected" gift to remember.

Barry took to social media last night to reveal what her eldest son put on the dinner table for the celebration – a plant-based "chook".

"I got hemp chicken for Mother’s Day," she wrote.

"The hemp chicken was actually delicious and utterly unexpected."

The veteran broadcaster also revealed while she wasn't a vegetarian, she was "very vege open-minded".

According to Callaghan Innovation, hemp chicken was developed in response to many meat alternatives that were being produced in New Zealand using imported proteins.

"Sustainable Foods however, wanted to lower the impact on the planet and find a New Zealand-based alternative for their new ‘chicken’ product," the agency said.

The result used hemp protein, pea protein, gluten, and oils to create a fibrous, "meaty" texture.

Still, one Facebook user said Barry's gift "sounds pretty out of it".

"I think being able to say you got a hemp chicken for Mother's Day is a gift in itself," another added.
