A 30-year-old man has been charged with murdering a couple who were found dead at a rural property in the central North Island last year.

Brendon and Trina Cole were found dead at their property on Murumuru Rd in Ruatiti, located around 21km southwest of Waimarino (National Park), on December 13.

Detective Inspector Gerard Bouterey said the arrest was a "significant milestone" for the team but that considerable work remained, with investigators continuing to pursue all outstanding lines of inquiry.

"We acknowledge that there are members of the public who may have information relevant to this investigation that has not been shared with us," he said.

"We strongly encourage anyone who has information or knowledge of this incident, including the events, movements, or items involved, to contact us if they have not yet done so."

Ruatiti is located near the Whanganui National Park, around 21km southwest of Waimarino (National Park).

Bouterey said police had identified during initial scene examinations and subsequent searches that a semi-automatic shotgun was missing.

"Investigators believe the firearm may have been modified, with the end of the barrel cut down."

The recovery of the firearm, which had not yet been located, remained a priority, he added.

"We want to reassure the community that this investigation is ongoing and remains active. The cooperation shown by the community has been invaluable during our investigation, and we thank them for their support."

The 30-year-old man was due to appear in the Whanganui District Court today charged with two counts of murder.
