One person has died and another has been seriously injured after an incident involving two dirt bikes in Northland overnight.
Police were called to Ngapipito Rd near Kaikohe following reports of a serious incident just after 11pm.
"One person was located deceased at the scene," a police spokesperson said.
Officers believed two people were knocked off their dirt bikes: one on Ngapipito Rd, Kaikohe and the other on Tana Rd, Moerewa.
"The second rider has been transported to hospital with serious injuries," police said.
Investigations were now underway to determine the circumstances of the incident.
Ngapipito Rd was closed between Mangakahia Rd (SH15) and the intersection of Tana Road, Moerewa.
The road was expected to remain closed for some time, and motorists were advised to avoid the area.
