A helicopter has crashed at Haast Pass on the West Coast, leaving one injured in a serious condition, according to St John.
A Hato Hone St John spokesperson said the agency was told at 3.42pm of an incident at Haast Pass Highway in Haast.
"One first response unit, one prime unit and one air rescue helicopter responded to the scene.
"Our ambulance staff treated one patient and transported them to Dunedin Public Hospital by helicopter in a serious condition."
Emergency responders received a 111 call at 3.45pm reporting the crash in the Haast area, a spokesperson for Fire and Emergency NZ said.
On arrival, no one was trapped, and crews assisted with first aid before leaving.
Four fire appliances from three brigades — Haast, Fox Glacier and Franz Josef — were initially deployed to the scene, according to FENZ.
A police spokesperson confirmed one person was injured.
Officers attended the scene of the crash and the spokesperson added the incident had been referred to the Civil Aviation Authority.
A spokesperson for the authority said it was aware of the crash.
"At this stage, the Civil Aviation Authority will make initial enquiries to understand what occurred and why, and to determine whether any further action is required."
