Man charged after standoff with police in Coromandel

Police were called to Tairua Whitianga Rd, Coroglen after reports of a man being seen with a gun at a property around 7pm.

A 37-year-old man has been charged after an incident involving a gun in the Coromandel overnight.

Police were called to Tairua Whitianga Rd in Coroglen after reports of a man being seen with a gun at a property around 7pm.

Officers attempted to engage with the man, however he did not respond to calls to exit the address, police said.

"A cordon was established and police continued to appeal to the man, and then deployed tactical options including a drone and gas," a police spokesperson said.

The man was taken into custody around 3am.

Two air rifles were recovered. The 37-year-old man was due to appear in Hamilton District Court today on a charge of presenting a firearm/restricted weapon.
