The crash occurred at the intersection of State Highway 36 and Leonard Rd in Ngongotaha at around 5.30am.

Two people were killed, while another was "seriously injured", police said.

"Initial enquiries show that one of the vehicles involved has crossed the centre line just prior to the crash, and we’re working to understand why that has occurred,” Inspector Logan Marsh said.

He thanked people who "rushed to help" and "did what they could" while emergency services responded.

“Crashes like this are devastating for the families involved and the community, and police will continue to support those affected by the tragic incident."
