Person dies after crash involving bus and pedestrian in Napier

A person has died following a crash between a bus and pedestrian in Hawke's Bay this morning.

Police were called to Tennyson St, Napier at around 8.30am on Friday.

Hato Hone St John said it responded with two ambulances, two operations managers and one rapid response vehicle.

"Despite the efforts of emergency personnel, one person was sadly pronounced deceased at the scene," a police spokesperson said.

"Passengers were on the bus involved at the time, but no other injuries were reported."

Hawke’s Bay Regional Council chair Sophie Siers confirmed the "serious accident" had involved one of its Route 3 GoBay buses, operated by Go Bus Transport.

"This is an extremely distressing situation, and our thoughts are with everyone affected," Siers said.

"We will fully cooperate with police to support their investigation into the crash."

Go Bus chief operating officer Ben Barlow confirmed in a statement that one of the company's buses was involved.

"Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the person who has died, and with those involved during this extremely difficult time.

"The circumstances surrounding the incident are under active investigation, and we are fully cooperating with Police as they carry out their enquiries.

"We are supporting our driver while the investigation continues."

Tennyson St would remain closed for a scene examination as police continue to investigate the circumstances of the crash.

Motorists were advised to expect delays and avoid the area if possible.
