Young people take to the roof of Auckland youth justice facility

A group of youths has climbed onto the roof of a youth justice facility in Auckland.

A police spokesperson said officers were called to the Oranga Tamariki Korowai Manaaki facility on Kiwi Tamaki Rd in Wiri at around 11.05am after reports that "several youths" had climbed onto the roof.

"Efforts to get them down are ongoing," police said.

The spokesperson said officers were assisting Oranga Tamariki as part of the response.

Footage from the facility showed a group of boys on the roof, some with shirts off and some holding stick-like objects.

Some appeared ot be trying to rip off parts of the corrugated iron roof.

Police officers and Oranga Tamariki staff were observing from the ground.

Dean Winter, Oranga Tamariki's deputy chief executive, youth justice services & residential care, confirmed staff were responding to an incident at the facility.

"We are working with police to resolve this matter and can confirm there are no concerns for public safety.

"The young people are still within the confines of the facility."
