Woman gives birth on Jamaica-New York flight

Caribbean Airlines flight.

A flight from Jamaica to New York had a suprise arrival after a woman gave birth midair.

The flight, which departed from Kingston on Saturday, was headed for John F. Kennedy International Airport when a "medical event" was declared.

It hasn't been revealed at what point in the four-hour flight the baby —whose gender is also unknown— was delivered.

A transcript of the conversation between the pilot and air traffic controller caught an apt name suggestion - "tell her she’s got to name it Kennedy” - referencing the airport's name.

Caribbean Airlines' policy on pregnant passengers allows travel without medical clearance through the end of the 32nd week of pregnancy.

It is unclear how far along in her pregnancy the passenger was.

The most recent research on babies born midair was conducted by Professor Travis W. Heggie at Ohio's Bowling Green State University in 2019, which recorded 74 births on commercial flights between 1929 and 2018.

The airline released a statement which said no emergency had been declared during the flight, and commending their staff for their efforts.

"The airline commends the professionalism and measured response of its crew, who managed the situation in accordance with established procedures, ensuring the safety and comfort of all onboard.”

Citizenship of the baby will depend on whether either parent is a US citizen, or if it was born within 12 miles of the coastline.

An executive order by President Donald Trump would restrict US citizenship to those born of US citizens or lawful resident parents, but has yet to be ruled on by the Supreme Court.
