At least 20 firefighters are at a commercial site in Hamilton after approximately 400 litres of sulphuric acid leaked this morning.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand's Hamilton shift manager Paul Radden told 1News crews recieved a hazardous substances call out shortly after 5am.
He said it was a sulphuric acid leak at a commercial premises in Melville in which around 400 litres had spilled.
Radden said there were at least 20 firefighters from four fire trucks and Hamilton's HAZMAT unit at the scene.
He said the crews were also seeking guidance from the Queensland Fire Department Scientific Branch, which specialised in providing technical and operational expertise to emergency responders to help them effectively manage unidentified hazardous materials.
FENZ were not able to comment about whether there were people on the premises, or if there was any threat to nearby people or properties.
Police and St John both confirmed it was notified, but not required for the incident, and referred all further questions to Fire and Emergency New Zealand.
