Unmarked police vehicle involved in central Auckland crash

Two people have been injured, including a police officer, after a car and an unmarked police vehicle collided in central Auckland last night.

Police said it was alerted to a two-vehicle crash on Newton Rd, Eden Terrace at around 8.50pm Sunday.

Hato Hone St John responded with one ambulance and one rapid response unit.

"Our crews assessed and treated one patient who was transported to Auckland City hospital in a serious condition," a spokesperson said.

Inspector Kai Shao confirmed a police officer and the driver of the second vehicle involved were injured in the incident.

"Two other police officers in the unmarked vehicle were uninjured, however both vehicles have sustained extensive damage," Shao said.

Newton Rd was closed for a period of time following the crash but has since reopened.

Inquiries into the circumstances of the crash were ongoing.
