Magnitude 7.4 earthquake strikes near Indonesia

A magnitude 7.4 earthquake has struck off the coast of Indonesia on Thursday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The large tremor struck at 6.48am (local time) in the Molucca Sea, around 120km from the city of Ternate, at a depth of approximately 35km.

The US Tsunami Warning System said hazardous tsunami waves were possible along the coasts of Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines.
