Burglar put on orthopaedic boot to change appearance and evade police

Man in a orthopaedic boot.

An alleged burglar put on an orthopaedic boot to change his appearance in what turned out to be a lame attempt to evade police.

Police were called to a store in Auckland's Birkenhead just after 4pm on Tuesday, after a man went it despite it being closed.

He allegedly stole money from the till as well as a knife, threatening a staff member with it as he left.

Walking along Recreation Drive, he went into another business, emerging in an orthopaedic boot and removing items of clothing to alter his appearance.

“But police were watching, and units soon caught up with him at a nearby bus stop,” Detective Inspector Megan Goldie said.

A 30-year-old man was arrested and charged with two counts of burglary.

He was due to appear at the North Shore District Court today.

"Police will oppose the man’s bail at this appearance," Goldie said.
