Man arrested, caught in drive-thru after alleged pizza shop robbery

Night service at a drive-thru.

An alleged Auckland pizza parlour robber has topped off his evening by calling at a drive-thru from where he was chased and served with an arrest by police.

Police were called to Sandringham Rd at around 10.15pm Tuesday, where a man reportedly went into a pizza restaurant armed with a machete.

Sergeant Ian Lambarth said the person threatened staff and forced them into a cooler room.

"The store’s till was stolen before the offender left the store," Lambarth said. "Fortunately, no one at the store suffered any physical injuries."

Police identified a stolen Volkswagen Golf leaving the area and it was later observed sitting in a drive-thru in Māngere.

Lambarth said the vehicle was successfully spiked leaving the drive-thru, but was driven at speed towards State Highway 1, heading south.

"The Golf was spiked a second time as it exited the motorway network," Lambarth said.

The vehicle eventually came to a stop on Beach Rd after all four tyres were spiked.

A 21-year-old man was arrested and charged with aggravated robbery, failing to stop and receiving stolen property.

He was due to appear in Auckland District Court today.

A 17-year-old male passenger would be referred to Youth Aid.
