Warriors co-captain Barnett sidelined after breaking thumb

Mitchell Barnett of the Warriors makes a break during the round four NRL match between New Zealand Warriors and Wests Tigers at Go Media Stadium, on March 27, 2026, in Auckland, New Zealand.

New Zealand Warriors co-captain Mitchell Barnett has been sidelined after breaking his right thumb during last Friday’s loss against the Wests Tigers.

A statement from the team confirmed the 31-year-old had surgery this week – but it was still uncertain when his return date would be.

Friday's match was his second appearance of the season, having returned from a knee injury. He played 52 minutes.

Before the match, which the Warriors lost 32-14, the team were eyeing their best opening month in their NRL history after three consecutive wins to start 2026.

The Warriors placed sixth last year and were knocked out in the elimination final by the Panthers.

Earlier this year, it was confirmed Barnett would return to Australia at the end of the season for personal reasons, marking an end to his career with the Warriors.

He will join the Brisbane Broncos.
