Police car.

A man stabbed in an assault in Hastings last night was then hit by a vehicle in what police believe was an unrelated hit-and-run.

Police were called to Heretaunga Street West at around 9.30pm after a pedestrian was hit by a vehicle between Stortford Street and Davis Street.

"It is reported the driver of the vehicle has failed to check on the victim and has fled the area, travelling towards Maraekakaha Road," Detective Sergeant Ryan Kemsley said.

When officers arrived, they found the victim had suffered "stab-like wounds" during an assault that occurred before the crash.

"The victim was transported to hospital with serious injuries and is now in a stable condition," Kemsley said.

Police were investigating both incidents and believed they were "unrelated".

Kemsley urged auged anyone with information about the incidents, including CCTV, dashcam, or video footage, to come foward.

"We are working to determine what has exactly occurred, however we would like to speak with anyone who has information that can assist in our enquiries."

Those with information were asked to call 105.
