From tripping on travellators to slipping down stairs – the airport can be a dangerous place for those not paying attention.

Alarming CCTV footage provided to 9News showed some of the hidden hazards unwary travellers face at one of Australia's busiest airports.

In the shocking footage, a woman was seen walking into a lowering boom gate, another falling down an escalator, and a child being knocked to the ground after barrelling into a small electric gate.

Brisbane Airport Corporation's Stacey Pollard said: "We do see when passengers arrive late and are stressed through the process, that is when incidents happen".

At Brisbane Airport, 30% of airport injuries occurred on escalators and travellators, particularly for children or elderly people.

"Passengers with heavy, or multiple suitcases on escalators, we often see this for elderly passengers where they can lose their balance, and fall," said Pollard.

Queensland's Kidsafe chief executive Susan Teerds also warned parents not to let their children ride on top of suitcases, as they could "topple off".

She said a fall from a great height could end in a "catastrophic brain injury".

The concerning footage has prompted a warning to Easter holidaymakers to stay alert to get to the gate – and their destinations – safely.

Last year, New Zealand's busiest international and domestic airport, Auckland Airport, said around 846,000 travellers were expected during the 2025 Easter and April school holiday period.

Auckland Airport chief operations officer Chloe Surridge said at the time this was "about the same level" as 2024's April holiday break for overall traveller numbers.

“As usual, we’re working closely with airlines and their ground handling providers, as well as government agencies at the airport, to make it as smooth as possible for travellers," she said.
