A driver has been killed in a crash at a racetrack near Dunedin last night.
Emergency services were notified of the two-vehicle crash at Beachlands Speedway at around 7.10pm on Saturday.
"Sadly, despite best efforts of emergency services, one person died at the scene," a police spokesperson said.
The serious crash unit conducted a scene examination.
Speedway NZ general manager Zoe Irons said the incident was under investigation.
"Speedway NZ extends its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased, as well as to our wider speedway community during this difficult time," she said in a statement to 1News.
"We take all incidents at our events extremely seriously. Any matter reported to us is subject to a thorough and formal investigation process in line with our safety and governance protocols."
Irons said the safety and wellbeing of competitors, officials, volunteers, and spectators remained "our highest priority".
"We will continue to work closely with relevant authorities and stakeholders as part of this process. At this time, our thoughts are with the family affected and everyone within our speedway community."
It was the second night of a clay track racing event, "Modified Thunder", according to the Beachlands Speedway site. Police said they would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the crash and may have footage of the incident.
"You can contact Police through 105, either online or over the phone, and reference file number 260329/1456."
WorkSafe said it had been notified of the incident and was making initial inquiries.
In 2024, a car flew over a safety fence in a streetstocks race at Beachlands Speedway.
Spectators at a Dunedin speedway had to run for cover when one car clipped another and was launched over the top of the safety fence.
