Four women were arrested after allegedly making off with more than $5000 worth of clothing from a Rebel Sport in Hamilton yesterday evening.
In all, police recovered three shopping trolleys loaded with clothing from Rebel Sport as well as clothes and cosmetics from other outlets.
Police said three women went into the store at The Base shopping centre at around 7.45pm, before running out carrying armfuls of clothing worth $5394.
The group was seen shortly after "struggling with their vehicle" and then heading towards Boulevard roundabout, police said.
A member of the public alerted police, who directed officers to a vehicle parked behind a Stihl shop.
One person in the vehicle was arrested.
With the help of a dog unit, three others were found nearby.
“Police are pleased to have caught the offenders so quickly – and we’d like to thank the man and his family who were the key to us finding the car that contained three shopping trolley loads of stolen Rebel Sports gear," Senior Sergeant Tina Shaw said.
Shaw said that during the incident, "several thousands of dollars" worth of clothing and cosmetics from multiple stores had been targeted.
Police were figuring out where all the items had come from so they could be returned.
A 24-year-old woman faced "multiple charges" and would appear in the Hamilton District Court today. Others, aged 30, 25, and 21, were bailed to appear at a later date.
