The Greater Wellington Regional Council is advising people to not swim in some rivers in the region due to toxic algae levels.
The council is advising people not to swim or let their dogs near the water due to the dangers of ingesting the harmful substance as it could lead to significant health risks.
"Toxic algae is a neurotoxin that acts like snake venom which can be harmful to humans and lethal for dogs if ingested", council said.

"If you think your dog has swallowed toxic algae, or it shows signs of lethargy, muscle tremors, fast breathing, paralysis or convulsions, should go to the nearest vet immediately".
The affected rivers are:
- The Waikanae River at Jim Cooke Park
- Te Awa Kairangi (Hutt River) at Silverstream
- Waipoua River at Colombo Road
- Ruamāhanga River at Double Bridges and Te Ore Ore
These safety measures have been put in place due to high levels of toxic algae and large amounts of detached mats forming in or around the river's edge.
Council said people should check the LAWA website for toxic algae warnings before visiting rivers in the Wellington region.
Council said they are monitoring popular river swimming spots for toxic algae weekly.
