A student has been taken into custody after an incident involving a teacher which prompted Tuakau College in north Waikato to be locked down and then closed for the day.

Counties Manukau CIB Detective Inspector Shaun Vickers said emergency services were called to the Buckland Rd school following a report of a person being injured just before 10am.

"Upon arrival, a young person was quickly taken into custody," he said.

The victim was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Earlier, St John said one person had been taken to hospital in a serious condition.

Vickers said officers were still making inquiries into exactly what has taken place, "however at this stage we can advise the incident involves a student and a teacher".

Tuakau College initiated its lockdown procedures following the incident, and this has now lifted.

"We can reassure the wider community that the matter is contained and there is no wider risk to students or the wider public.

The lockdown notice was lifted around 11.30am.

In a statement posted to Facebook, the school board said it had made the decision to close the school at 1pm.

"We appreciate that this is an unprecedented situation. The guidance team are available for both staff and students and can be reached via email to book an appointment."
