Rental car seized after speeding more than 100 times

Sergeant Matthew Lee said the highest recorded speed, up to 170km/h, was logged on Wednesday.

A rental car has been seized by police after it was allegedly clocked exceeding the speed limit more than 100 times across the lower South Island, including one instance of the vehicle reaching up to 170km/h.

Police were alerted by a rental car company earlier this week after GPS data showed one of its vehicles travelling at high speeds over several days.

The company reported around 117 instances of the vehicle exceeding posted speed limits since last Thursday.

Sergeant Matthew Lee said the highest recorded speed, up to 170km/h, was logged on Wednesday.

"Officers located and stopped the vehicle on State Highway 1, just north of Dunedin, at around 10.45am on Wednesday."

The vehicle was being driven by a 36-year-old woman from Invercargill who was carrying one passenger.

Lee said the two women were taken to Dunedin by the officers while the rental company arranged the immediate return of the vehicle.

"Inquiries into the matter are continuing."
