Large blaze at Upper Hutt car wreckers extinguished

A large fire at a wrecking yard in Upper Hutt which sent thick plumes of smoke billowing over the area this afternoon has been extinguished.

Fire and Emergency NZ received calls to the fire at Hillside Auto Wreckers on Blenheim St around 1.30pm.

Nine fire trucks and three specialist vehicles from Trentham, Remutaka, Avalon, Silverstream, Wellington City and Thorndon were in sent to the incident.

The blaze was extinguished at 3.08pm, Fire and Emergency said in an update.

"Crews are now working through the vehicles to ensure everything is fully out."

A fire truck with a ladder attended but had since been stood down.

Police said there were no injuries reported.

The road was closed and officers were at the scene for traffic management.

Motorists were being asked to avoid the area.

A Fire and Emergency investigator was at the scene to look into the cause of the fire.
