Two people have died following a two-vehicle crash near Levin in the early hours of this morning.
Emergency services were called to State Highway 57 at around 2.30am on Monday.
"Sadly, two people were pronounced deceased at the scene," a police spokesperson said.
The road remained closed while the serious crash unit conducted a scene examination, with inquiries ongoing into the circumstances of the crash.
NZTA said State Highway 57 was closed between the intersections of SH1 and Tararua Rd.
"Continue using an alternative route for travel through the area and allowing additional time for travel," an NZTA spokesperson said.
St John has been contacted for comment.
The double fatal crash brings the road toll to eight in the past 48 hours.
Six were killed and multiple others were injured in a series of crashes across the country on Sunday.
