Kiwi woman drowns while snorkelling in Cook Islands

A New Zealand woman has drowned while snorkelling with friends in the Cook Islands, local police say.

In a Facebook post, Cook Islands Police said the 66-year-old had been pulled from the water unresponsive from a lagoon at Vaimaanga in Rarotonga on Wednesday afternoon.

The New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade told 1News it was aware of reports a New Zealander had drowned.

"Due to privacy reasons, no further information will be provided," a spokesperson for MFAT said.

Cook Islands Police said the death had been referred to the coroner today.
