A rahui is in place after a tramper died at Te Papa-Kura-o-Taranaki (Egmont National Park) yesterday afternoon.
Police and the Department of Conservation confirmed a person died while walking the Pouākai Track
A helicopter was called in to help bring the person down from the mountain.
"Enquiries into the circumstances of the death are ongoing, however it is expected to be referred to the Coroner," a police spokesperson said.
DOC said Taranaki iwi had declared a rahui on the Pouākai Range from Friday, March 20, until Monday, March 23 at 2pm.
"The rāhui acknowledges the death and expresses sympathy to the whānau of the deceased," a DOC spokesperson said.
"It provides time for tapu (sacredness) to dissipate following the fatality allowing time for healing and recovery of the natural elements at place as well as the people - in particular, the grieving whānau."
Visitors to Pouākai Range were asked to respect the rahui while it was in place.
