Police were called to Worcester St, between Latimer Sq and Barbadoes St, at around 10pm Thursday following reports a person had "received wounds consistent with being stabbed".
"The woman was transported to Christchurch Hospital by ambulance, where she underwent surgery," said Sergeant Ben Rolton.

A scene guard was in place overnight, and a scene examination would take place today.
Critical injuries after assault
One person has also been critically injured following a serious assault in Amberly, Hurunui District, last night.
Sergeant Karen Simmons said police were called at around 10.25pm Thursday to an address on Racecourse Rd, with reports a person had been seriously assaulted.

"The victim was transported to hospital with critical injuries and is currently undergoing surgery."
Simmons said police were speaking with a person in relation to the incident and were not seeking anyone else at this time.
A scene examination was underway at the address and inquiries into the circumstances were ongoing.
A 1News reporter at the scene said the police examination seemed focused on an outdoor spot, with tape set up in an area of scattered trees away from the house on the property.
