State Highway 2 near Gisborne is expected to be closed for some time following a serious crash.
The crash occurred at State Highway 2/ Matawai Rd in Waipaoa — near McMillian Rd — shortly before 7am.
Police said the serious crash unit has been informed and the road was expected to be closed for some time while emergency services worked at the scene.
In a later update, police said there were expected to be "extensive delays of several hours".
"The diversion is also extensive and motorists, including those in commercial vehicles, are asked to delay travel or consider alternative options."
St John sent one ambulance and one rapid response vehicle.
One person in a serious condition was being taken to hospital.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand also attended.
