Person dies following serious crash on SH2 near Gisborne

The crash occurred at State Highway 2 in Waipaoa, near McMillian Rd.

One person has died following a serious crash which caused "extensive delays" on State Highway 2 near Gisborne this morning.

The crash occurred at State Highway 2/ Matawai Rd in Waipaoa — near McMillian Rd — shortly before 7am.

Earlier, police said there were" likely to be extensive delays, of several hours" following the serious two-vehicle crash.

"Sadly, one person was found deceased at the scene," a police spokesperson confirmed.

St John sent one ambulance and one rapid response vehicle.

One person was also taken to hospital in a serious condition.

The road remained closed this afternoon while the Serious Crash Unit completed a scene examination.

New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi said there was "no immediate detour", and urged people to delay their journey between Te Karaka and Waipaoa settlements.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand also attended.
