Where NZ's next average speed safety cameras are being installed

New average speed safety cameras will come online across Auckland and northern Waikato in the coming weeks, with more installations planned nationwide later this year.

The cameras measure a vehicle’s average speed between two fixed points and automatically ticket drivers who exceed the posted limit.

Four new sets of average speed cameras will start operating in Auckland and northern Waikato in the coming weeks, at Kahikatea Flat Rd near Dairy Flat later this month, and Pine Valley Rd (Dairy Flat), Whitford Rd (east Auckland) and on State Highway 2 between Pōkeno and Mangatāwhiri in April.

Signage would be installed at the sites before the cameras come online.

Construction would also begin this month on other average speed safety cameras on State Highway 2 at Upper Hutt, near Te Hauke in Hawke's Bay, and on State Highway 8 between Tekapo and Twizel.

NZTA said the rollout of the country's first average speed camera on Auckland's Matakana Rd in December resulted in more than 99% of drivers following the speed limit – up from 88%.

Head of driving regulation Chris Rodley said the cameras had worked as intended.

"International experience shows that average speed safety cameras are highly effective at reducing deaths and serious injuries. When more people drive within the speed limit, crashes are less likely to occur, and if they do happen, they are far less severe."

Speeding drivers could cause "serious and irreparable harm" on the roads, he said.

"Evidence shows we can significantly reduce the chances of people being killed or seriously injured if drivers travel within speed limits – and that’s why we use safety cameras."
