An Auckland woman accused of defrauding an unsuspecting Dunedin man out of more than half a million dollars through what police describe as an “elaborate” 18‑year romance scam has pleaded not guilty.

Police allege the 44‑year‑old Ellerslie woman conducted the online scam between 2006 and 2024, ultimately obtaining $525,357 from the man, according to court documents.

Officers searched an Auckland property in February with assistance from the Auckland City financial crime unit.

Appearing in the Auckland District Court today, the woman’s lawyer, Marek Hamlin, entered a not guilty plea and elected trial by jury.

He told the court his client had indicated she wanted to resolve the matter with the victim.

Judge Debra Bell ordered her bail conditions and interim name suppression remain in place until she reappears in court in June.

Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Ali Ramsay earlier said romance‑scam investigations were often challenging because many offenders operated offshore.

“At the very heart of this are victims whose good nature is taken advantage of, causing emotional and financial stress,” Ramsay said.

Police are again urging the public to remain cautious when connecting with new people online or through dating apps.
