Man in trench coat sought after Napier walking track assault

Police want to speak with the owner of a white ute that was nearby when this assault took place.

Police in Napier are searching for man reported to be wearing a trench coat, with spiked black hair and bright blue eyes following an assault last week.

Officers received a report of an assault just before 7.30am on the Limestone Track, between Ulyatt Rd and Riverbend Rd on March 6.

Hawke’s Bay CIB Acting Detective Sergeant Emma Wiltshire said the victim was able to get to safety uninjured, however they were "understandably very shaken by the incident".

Police had been unable to locate the offender and had appealed to the public for information.

"Police are looking for a man described to be in his late 40s, Caucasian with bright blue eyes. He has short black spikey hair, shorter on the sides than on top, and short dark grey facial hair that covered his cheeks, moustache, and chin area," Wiltshire said.

"He is skinny to average build and approximately 6ft/182cm tall. He was reported to be wearing a black trenchcoat, a dark grey scarf, black pants, and black leather-type shoes.

"The trenchcoat had buttons down the front and deep pockets on the side."

Wiltshire said anyone who had seen this man, witnessed this incident, or had any information about his whereabouts, should contact police.

"We also want to speak with the owner of a white ute that was nearby when this assault took place," she said.

"Additionally, if you have CCTV or dashcam footage of the Ulyatt Rd and Riverbend Rd areas, between 7am and 8am on Friday, March 6, please get in touch so that we may review that footage."

Information could be provided through 105 online, over the phone, or anonymously through Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
