'Heartbeaking': Person dies after car crashes into cafe on North Shore

A car hit a building on William Souter Street, Forrest Hill shorty before 9am.

One person has been killed and two others injured after a car crashed into a café on Auckland's North Shore this morning, with a witness describing the scene as "heartbreaking".

Emergency services were called to the single-vehicle crash on William Souter Street, Forrest Hill, shortly before 9am.

Police said a car had mounted the curb and hit two people before hitting a building.

"One person was transported to hospital in a critical condition, and they have sadly now died from their injuries," a police spokesperson said.

St John said another person was moderately injured and taken to hospital.

A third person, who also suffered moderate injuries, was treated at the scene.

A worker who was nearby described hearing a loud bang, and said the scene was "heartbreaking".

They said a person from a nearby vet rushed out to help and comfort the badly injured woman and tried to keep her conscious.

Others tried to make sure everyone else was safe.

William Souter Street was closed between East Coast Rd and Morton Avenue, police said.

The serious crash unit also attended the scene.
