Two people have died following a serious crash in the Southland rural community of Isla Bank earlier this morning.

The two-car crash at the intersection of Fairfax-Isla Bank Rd and Isla Bank-Flints Bush Rd, about 37km northwest of Invercargill, was reported to emergency services just before 9am.

"Despite emergency services' best efforts, two people sadly died at the scene," a police spokesperson said.

Police said the road had since reopened following a scene examination by the Serious Crash Unit.

Inquiries into the crash were ongoing.
