Two teenagers were arrested after a bag containing cannabis and cash was left outside an op shop in Southland and mistaken for a donation last month.
A volunteer at the store discovered the bag on February 18 and brought it inside, initially assuming it was a routine donation.
However, the worker noticed a strong smell coming from the bag and, on opening it, found multiple bags of cannabis and a large amount of cash. Police were contacted immediately.
While staff were calling police, two teenagers entered the shop in an agitated state, asking about a missing bag.
Officers arrived shortly after and detained the pair under the Search and Surveillance Act due to their escalating behaviour.
A search of the bag revealed 43.2 grams of cannabis, scales, ziplock bags and $3700 in cash.
Police determined the pair had left the bag outside the shop while their vehicle was being serviced at a nearby workshop. Officers searched the vehicle and located an air pistol, a police scanner and a further $810.
The 16-year-old male and 16-year-old female were arrested and taken to a police station.
