A man who drowned in Canterbury's Waimakariri River yesterday was trying to save his dog, police said.
Emergency services responded to the scene at around 4.30pm on Sunday.
"Despite the efforts of emergency services, the person died at the scene," police said.
Christchurch Metro area commander Superintendent Lane Todd described the incident as "very tragic".
"Unfortunately, his dog has not been located," he said.
The death has been referred to the Coroner.
