Aerial searches along West Coast for person swept out to sea

Emergency services received a report of a person swept out to sea in the Blaketown area at around 6pm on Saturday.

Aerial searches are being conducted along a large swathe of the West Coast shoreline today as the search continues for a person swept out to sea on Saturday.

Emergency services received a report of a person swept out to sea at Blaketown, near Greymouth, at around 6pm on Saturday.

Extensive searches were carried out by several agencies on Sunday, and Senior Sergeant Mark Kirkwood said the search resumed this morning between Ross and Charleston with the assistance of Precision Helicopters.

"At this stage, the person has not yet been located, with rough sea conditions and white caps making the search difficult."

Police were also making inquiries into a kayak that washed up near Blaketown at around 7.30pm on Saturday, shortly after the person was reported missing.

"Police continue to make enquiries to identify the person swept out to sea, and if the kayak is linked to the person," Kirwood said.
